A GROUP WHO MEETS TO LEARN AND DEVELOP QUILTING AND PATCHWORK SKILLS AND DESIGNS

A quilt is simply where a top layer may consist of pieces of fabric sewn together to form a design. Designs can be geometric and formal or imaginative.

Patchwork blocks were initially created individually, accumulated over time, by use of scrap and salvaged material and geometric designs were the most efficient way to aggregate fabric into useful units. Early uses of applique in the United States included efforts to expand the effect of expensive, imported European fabrics in early America.

Although quilting has a long history (more than 5,000 years) and takes various forms in many cultures, the patchwork quilt became a distinctive expression of 19thC American settlement, evolving into a representative folk art of interest to scholars that is still produced today. Patchwork in both In Europe and North America in the 19th C became a ladies’ leisure pursuit.

BNB, in line with many groups around the country, would like to resurrect this craft with its associated social function and has set up a group to learn the technique, or if already proficient, provide an environment for you to develop or practice your skills.

If you are interested it is now your time to join the group to either participate in a ‘quilting bee’, start a quilt, or to bring along your own quilt to work on. The group can accommodate everyone from the absolute beginner to those who have a lot of experience and knowledge. You do not have to attempt a large quilt as the group undertakes cushion covers, table runners and other sewed items all in patchwork.

Every one is welcome to come and join. We positively welcome new members. Any new potential members of the group can come and sit and listen (and join in) whilst having a cup of coffee (or tea) if you are not sure or want to experience this friendly and very satisfying art.
