Poetry Appreciation

A GROUP WHO COME TOGETHER TO READ, ENJOY AND DISCUSS POETRY. IN DOING SO THEY BRING A WIDENING RANGE OF APPRECIATION WHICH ENHANCES EVERYONE’S UNDERSTANDING AND DELIGHT

From the romantic rhythms of Wordsworth, thought provoking and amusing poems of Pam Ayres, nonsense poems of Edward Lear and the raw and passionate poems of Maya Angelou, the art of poetry generates profound emotions and imaginations.

Poetry is not just the poems we read in books.  It is all around us – in the nursery rhymes we teach our children, the hymns we sing, and the songs we listen to on the radio.  The appreciation of poetry is to recognise the sound and rhythm of the carefully chosen and arranged words of the poet that instils understanding and reflection.

Poetry sticks in the mind – we all remember at least one poem we learnt at school, even if it is just the first couple of lines.

At the BNB U3A Poetry Appreciation Group, members agree a topic for the next meeting.  Members of the group then research three poems on that subject that they like or feel is relevant and appropriate.  At the next meeting each reads out their contributions and the group discusses the pieces. In this way a wider appreciation of the chosen poetry is spread throughout the group.  It is always amazing the range of poetry that can be found on any one topic.

If you have an interest in poetry, enjoy listening to poems being read or just enjoy the search for the perfect piece that reflects the subject chosen, then come along and join in this informal and light-hearted group.
