One of our members has recently been a victim of a scam phone call, and wants everyone to be aware of this and be cautious of any unsolicited phone calls.
A typical scam is where someone receives a phone call that appeared to be from the 'Fraud Department' of your bank, and they try to persuade you that your bank account has been compromised and you should move your money to a new 'safe' account so that it would be safe. They will try and persuade you to download some software that allows them to access your PC, and as a result will try and take money from your bank account using this software.
Fortunately our member did not lose any money on this occasion, but if you receive a phone call similar to this HANG UP IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT ALLOW ANYONE TO DOWNLOAD SOFTWARE TO YOUR PC AS THEY WILL TRY AND STEAL YOU MONEY!
If you feel you might have been affected by something like this CONTACT YOUR BANK, USING THE SPECIAL NUMBER '159'. This will put you through to the Fraud department and you can select which bank you are with to get to the right people whi can hel you recover and lost money.
PLEASE BE CAREFUL - THERE ARE LOTS OF SIMILAR SCAMS AROUND AT PRESENT!
Contact our BNB u3a Computer Group if you need any further help or advice.
